mccain, these are two very different people and personalities and when obama would speak, john mccain would furiously taking notes. he is always over calf and it anyway. i love the guy and i like him, but he would take all of these notes and when you look over at obama, when mccain was speaking, obama never took a note. he tried to maintain absolute, direct eye contact, with john mccain almost as if, you will not rattle my chain. and he just keep looking at him and the only time -- during the debate, i still, do not know why he did this, he picked up his pen and he would draw a straight line across the notebook. if this was some sort of as an exercise or maybe he was putting 400 pounds of weight on this or whenever he was doing -- he always did that and i've never had the opportunity to ask why he did that. during the primary debates with romney, and i talk to him about this, he always wrote something down at the top of this note but and i asked him, what do you write down there? he said, i write down, dad, and it reminds me of my father, and he is my hero. he says i just think of him

police people who were tough on him, like john mccain and lindsey graham were clearly not in his camp to begin with. but you have to see whether somebody takes that next step and puts a hold on the nomination. you know, it is one thing to oppose him. it is another thing to put a hold on the nomination and ask for a filibuster, because then you're declaring war on the president. >> then you need 60, in order to confirm him, there are 55 democrats, so you need five republicans. >> and there were filibuster threats, but i don't think there is a full-scale filibuster to block a cabinet nominee. no question, as gloria said, the republicans, somebody who is in the tribe and moves out is often treated more harshly than somebody who hadn't been there. taking it to the next step -- >> even if he is confirmed, how does that impact as a sitting defense secretary? >> well, this is usually one of the less partisan positions. we saw it from bill clinton to barack obama, who have often reached out to put somebody in from the other party. which of course is what barack obama is doing. as i said, peop

john mccain, lindsey graham, they're always together. not surprisingly. they're good friends, allies on so many of these issues. this is a moment where so many members of the house and the senate, democrats and republicans, some actually try to sit together to demonstrate that there can be some bipartisan cooperation. we'll see what kind of reaction the president of the united states gets when he utters some of the famous words that he will be saying. there you see, by the way, also behind dennis mcdonough, you see eric holder, the attorney general right there. but we did see susan rice, the ambassador to the unit, john boehner, the speaker, joe biden, the vice president will be presiding over this session. chris cuomo is watching it. as soon as the members of the cabinet come in, the president will be introduced. >> thank you very much. let's come back to our minds over here. you're giving me ideas for what you want to talk about. we hear from the white house that this speech will be effective because the president is doing what he does best, speaking to
